- Week 1 - Students brainstormed research questions of interest to them. It started with open-ended idea generation followed by the presentation of visual or physical stimuli to prompt additional questions. Then, using a structured research template, students developed their research question, identified independent and dependent variables (with operational definitions), determined the type of study, and began outlining materials and procedures.
- Week 2 - Students conducted their experiments and collected and recorded data in their lab notebooks. They used a project template that included sections for results, conclusions, whether the hypothesis was supported, and the health message linked to their study.
- Week 3 - A science concept checklist was provided to help students reflect on the concepts they had used. Students assembled science fair boards using a template provided by their Guides (i.e., near peer mentors). Students rehearsed presenting their work to their Guides and their research group.
- Week 4 - The Science Fair was held in week 4 in the gymnasium at the Overtown Youth Center building. A panel of 3 to 4 judges visited each poster and heard the presentation delivered by the members of each team of students.
