The University of Miami Tobacco, Obesity, and Oncology Laboratory (TOOL) was established in 2008. It is a part of the Department of Psychology and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (dually aligned with the Biobehavioral Oncology and Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention programs). TOOL is located in the Behavioral Medicine Research Center (BMRC) on the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine campus

Our primary mission is to conduct high-quality, tobacco control and cancer prevention research that advances tobacco-related science and tobacco-related interventions. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the human and economic costs of tobacco smoking by conducting research that considers the mental health, educational, cessation, relapse-prevention, and illness-related needs of individuals who smoke tobacco. Additionally, TOOL seeks to contribute to the needs of the scientific, tobacco control, and health care communities. The research conducted by TOOL focuses on mechanisms to provide more effective cessation and relapse-prevention strategies, particularly in Southern Florida. Moreover, research that contributes to the understanding of tobacco use and tobacco-related illnesses in underserved populations is of great interest.

The TOOL also conducts evidence-based research on healthy weight management and lifestyle changes that promote this aim. Weight management consists of healthy eating and regular physical activity among other behavior changes. With lifestyle interventions we aim to assist participants in defining weight management goals, healthy eating plans, and appropriate physical activity in order to reduce the negative health effects of obesity and inactivity. Obesity can cause a series of health issues including but not limited to asthma, heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Physical inactivity can also increase your chances of developing such ailments or cause existing conditions to worsen. We hope to further engage in weight management interventions and obesity research to effect positive change in the community.

The scope of our projects and programs is constantly evolving; check our 'New U Research Studies' section to see if any of these are of interest to you or someone you know!
