How to Apply

Overview

The Adult Division is dedicated to training the next generation of clinical scientists. Coursework in this area focuses on the current state of theory and knowledge in various aspects of psychology, plus instruction and experience in the principles and techniques of research design and data analysis. There is an active collaboration between students and faculty in research activities throughout the period of graduate training. Students receive training in techniques of psychological assessment and in the conceptualization and conduct of therapy. As UM is an APA-accredited program in clinical psychology, an internship is required for the degree.

Program Progression

The program presently is designed to be completed in four to five years, plus a 1-year internship. Our intent is that students develop a sufficient base of research training and publications to compete successfully in the job market after the Ph.D. is awarded.

Sixty-four approved graduate credits are required, plus the dissertation. All students in the Adult Clinical area are required to complete core courses covering basic fields of psychology: Psychobiology, Psychopathology, Social Psychology, and Developmental Psychology. All students also complete three courses in research design and statistical analysis. Adult Division students take courses in adult psychopathology; adult psychological assessment; and psychological intervention.
