Research Interests
Transdiagnostic and other novel treatments for anxiety disorders and related conditions in youth, etiology of child anxiety, the role of technology in clinician training and dissemination of evidence based treatments for children and adolescents.
Current Research
Our group is conducting two grant-funded investigations (described below), and currently initiating or conducting several additional studies regarding child and adolescent anxiety and related disorders:
- Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Adolescence
- Efficacious treatments exist for anxiety and depression in youth. However, such evidence based treatment s often fail to reach those children and adolescents that need them the most. There are many reasons for this disconnect between interventions research and real-world practice. In our lab, we are broadly interested in helping children and adolescents with anxiety and depression get the evidence based treatments that are believed to help them the most. In this project, we are examining a transdiagnostic or Unified treatment approach for adolescents (aged 12-17) with anxiety and/or depressive disorders. This treatment approach has a strong basis in theories regarding emotion regulation and presents adolescents and their families with evidenced based treatment components formatted to be applicable across multiple types of anxiety and depressive disorders. This study is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. Study treatment is provided in the Department of Psychology at the University of Miami and is available at no cost to adolescents that qualify.
- Emotion Detectives - Group Treatment for Children
- Emotion Detectives is a group treatment program for children between the ages of 7-11 with an anxiety disorder or depressive symptoms. We are currently conducting research to establish the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of this cognitive behavioral group program as both a treatment and a prevention program. Emotion Detectives takes principles from our Unified Protocol for adolescents and applies them with children in a fun, creative and challenging environment. We are currently recruiting children with anxiety and/or depression to this activity-filled group program as part of an ongoing open trial.
- Treatment of Anxiety in Adolescents with High-Functioning Autism
- The Child and Adolescent Mood and Anxiety Treatment Program is pleased to be collaborating with the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at the University of Miami, University of California, Los Angeles, and University of South Florida to evaluate the efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral treatment for adolescents with an anxiety disorder and high-functioning autism. At UM, we are currently recruiting older adolescents and young adults (ages 14-21) to a pilot study of this treatment program.
- Computer-based Clinician Training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Adolescent Panic Disorder
- As noted above, we are very interested in examining a host of avenues for aiding in the dissemination of evidence based treatments for anxiety in youth. We are also interested in using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for adolescent panic disorder (Pincus, Ehrenreich & Mattis, 2008) as one model for such work, along with the use of technology to help facilitate dissemination aims. In this study, also funded by the National Institute for Mental Health and conducted in conjunction with the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University and Behavioral Tech Research in Seattle, Washington, we are developing a computer-based clinician training program to teach clinicians how to conduct CBT for adolescent panic disorder. This computer-based training program will then be compared in a randomized controlled trial with other common methods of clinician training.
If you are interested in having your adolescent screened for any of these projects or would like more information, please contact the Child and Adolescent Mood and Anxiety Treatment Program research coordinator at (305) 284-9852 or email us at anxietylab@psy.miami.edu
