Associate Professor of Psychology University of Miami, 1999

Research Interests
Psycho-oncology, HIV and psychoneuroimmunology; psychology of aging and immunosenescence in chronically ill older adults; stress, coping, and personality styles in chronic illness.

Research Interests

My research is primarily focused on evaluating the efficacy of group- and individual-based stress management interventions on reducing distress, and improving quality of life and physical health among older adults (> 50 yrs.) with chronic illnesses such as Cancer and HIV. I am particularly interested in how psychosocial factors such as stress, coping and personality style may interact with health behaviors (e.g., treatment adherence), neuroendocrine function and the age-related decrements in immune function (i.e., immunosenescence) seen in older populations. More specifically, I am interested in how stress and other psychosocial factors may interact with, and exacerbate, age-related decrements in immune function that may promote disease progression in Cancer and HIV.

Center for Psycho-Oncology Research

Currently, I co-lead a project in our Center for Psycho-Oncology Research evaluating the effects of Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management in Prostate Cancer. In this project, together with a team of clinical researchers, I am evaluating to what extent can a psychosocial intervention reduce distress and improve quality of life and physical health in older men who have been treated for Prostate Cancer. I am particularly interested in how intervention-associated changes in several domains (e.g., coping, distress) can promote better quality of life and health status via neuroendocrine (e.g., stress hormones) and immune (e.g., natural killer cell cytotoxicity) pathways. Additionally, I am also leading a study that culturally and linguistically translates this project for Spanish speaking men with Prostate Cancer.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center

My other projects in the area of Cancer and older populations include a longitudinal study examining the psychosocial correlates of adjustment, quality of life and physical health among men and women recently diagnosed with Head and Neck Cancer. Participants in this study complete psychosocial (e.g., distress, coping, personality) and physical health measures immediately following diagnosis and three months after completing treatment (e.g., surgery, radiation).

Redes en Acción

Special Population Network for Cancer in Hispanic/Latinos

I am also principal investigator for the Southeast U.S. region of the National Cancer Institute--Special Population Network for Cancer in Hispanic/Latinos. Redes en Acción (Networks in Action: National Hispanic/Latino Cancer Network) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) funded program that focuses on promoting Cancer research, training, and awareness. Redes brings together communities, organizations and individuals in national, regional, state, community, and academic networks to promote cancer control and prevention training, research, and awareness activities targeting the Hispanic/Latino population in the United States. The Southeast Region consists of Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. The major aims of the Redes SPN are:

  1. To develop and maintain a network of individuals, cancer research centers, community-based organizations, and federal partners to foster a national infrastructure for cancer training, research, and awareness activities.
  2. To establish training and research opportunities for Hispanic/Latino students and researchers.
  3. To develop pilot projects into full competing grant applications.
  4. To continually support cancer awareness activities.

HIV Program Project

In addition to Cancer research, I am actively involved in our HIV Program Project. I currently lead a stress management intervention study designed to reduce distress and sustain or improve medication adherence and promote better physical health status among HIV+ heterosexual men with or without a history of drug use. Within our overall HIV projects, I lead a NIA-funded study evaluating age-differences in psychosocial and immune (e.g., naÏve/memory T-lymphocytes, pro-inflammatory cytokines) parameters among HIV+ men and women of various ethnicities and self-identified sexual orientations.

Ovarian Cancer Study

In collaboration with the University of Iowa (Dr. Susan Lutgendorf, PI), we are involved in study is funded by the National Cancer Institute designed to better understand the relationships between behavioral factors, hormones and cytokines including tumor growth factors such as VEGF in women newly diagnosed and treated for ovarian cancer. This study will provide a better understanding of how psychosocial factors such as social support and stress may buffer or promote disease processes via endocrine and immune mechanisms.

HIV Aging Reactivity Study

Rates of HIV infection among older adults are on the rise and this population typically presents with more advanced disease and are at greater risk for progression. Several lines of evidence suggest that a combination of psychological stress and age-related decrements in the immune system of older adults (immunosenescence) may be related to faster HIV disease progression. In this study, we are looking at the effects of a brief psychological stressor (a short speech) on immune messengers (cytokines) in older adults living with HIV. Specifically, we are looking at the cytokines IL-6, TNF-alpha and IL-10 and their interactions with epinephrine and norepinephrine before and after the speech stressor. By doing so, we hope to elucidate the links between psychological stress and HIV disease progression in older adults.

Courses

PSY342 - Psychology of Adulthood and Aging

The aim of this course is to provide students with a broad overview and introduction to the psychology of aging.  Students will be introduced to the major developments during the middle and later years of adulthood including social (e.g., retirement), cognitive (e.g., processing speed declines) and physical (e.g., organ changes, immunosenescence) changes.  Basic theoretical models as applied to the biology of aging and psychosocial development in adulthood will be discussed.  Research methods and current information on the psychology of aging will be covered and applied to the understanding of older adults.
