We believe that the most accurate and comprehensive approach to evaluating autism and other developmental disorders involves a multifaceted evaluation. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine current level of functioning and appropriate diagnosis, as well as to provide detailed recommendations based upon the client's individual profile and best practices strategies.

ASAC Evaluation is based on individual needs and includes the use of the Gold Standards in Autism Diagnostic Assessments:

  • The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is a semi-structured observation instrument used to assess social and communicative behaviors in individuals.
  • The Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised (ADI-R) is a semi-structured interview that targets the quality of a person’s communication, social development, and interests and behaviors, the three areas that are affected in individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
  • Psychological/Developmental Assessments to measure the individual’s current cognitive functioning.
  • Psychoeducational Assessments to measure academic achievement, including strengths and weaknesses, in school-aged children.
  • Communication Assessment to assess current expressive, receptive, and pragmatic (socially motivated) language.
  • Adaptive Behavior Scales to determine the level of the person’s performance in the day-to-day activities necessary to take care of oneself and get along with others.
  • Social/Emotional Assessment to evaluate additional social and emotional problems as needed.
  • Behavioral Observations may include school observation.

Families are provided with in-person feedback and a detailed evaluation report. A significant portion of the report is devoted to individualized recommendations for intervention and education for children.

Re-evaluations are available. Families are invited back to ASAC for follow-up evaluations following the comprehensive assessment. Most children return to our team every two years during school years for a comprehensive re-evaluation. Recommendations are updated at that time.

Screenings are available for children under the age of 3 years to provide initial information regarding current symptomatology and to assess the need for additional evaluation. For families living in the South Florida area, the University of Miami / Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) provides direct family assistance and follow-up. Families living in other parts of Florida are referred to their regional CARD Centers. Out-of-state and international families are assisted by ASAC staff.
